Inkjet

Piezoelectric

Piezoelectric inkjet technology was invented and is under patent by Epson. In this technology, a small piezo-crystal is attached to the ink reservoir in the nozzle. When a dot is required, a tiny current is passed through the piezo-crystal which causes it to oscillate. This oscillation causes a drop of ink to be squeezed out of the nozzle.

There are several advantages of using piezoelectric technology over thermal inkjet. First of all, it gives greater control over the amount of ink that is sprayed. Also, the ink does not have to be heated and cooled saving both time and allowing for the use of a greater variety of inks. Lastly, in practice piezoelectric printers generally produce higher quality images especially when printed on glossy paper. Typical quality is around 720 dpi.
